It lends a positive note to the start of any enterprise or relationship and indicates the good intentions of the person offering it. Khata's are most known for being given to dharma teachers when making an offering. You present the offering to the teacher along with the khata and he returns the khata to you by placing it around your neck. The khata in and of itself can be an offering. They are also offered to dharma images, statues or symbols. For example if you took a certain empowerment from a teacher and after you received your khata back it would be wonderful to place the khata near a picture or statue of the deity and or the teacher you received the Empowerment from.
