Chenrezig is the Tibetan name for Avalokiteshavra, the bodhisattva of love and compassion whose name means “one who looks down”. He appears in the feminine as Kwan Yin. He can and does manifest throughout the Six Realms in any form he deems most suitable. He embodies all of the love and compassion of Buddha’s past, present, and future. His mantra, OM MA NI PAD ME HUNG is the most well known mantra in the Universe. He is especially beloved by the people of Tibet. Amithabha sent Chenrezig to Tibet care for its people. Both the Dalai Lama, and the Karmapa are manifestations of Chenrezig. He is seated on a lotus. Between his first hands is a Wishfulling Jewel of bodhichitta at his heart. The crystal rosary he holds is symbolic of liberating sentient beings from cyclical existence with ideals, means and aspirations. His holding a white lotus flower in his second left hand symbolizes his stainless wisdom that as realized the nature of emptiness. The skin of a compassionate deer that sacrificed his life in an attempt to stop a fight amongst two hunters is worn over his left breast and rests on the heart, which is where the mind actually sits in all beings. To have an image of Chernrezig invokes unconditional love, compassion and protection.
